Cobblestones
I don't think we have cobblestone streets like this in Australia (or Thailand for that matter) but they're quite common in Europe. Stuttgart has a few of them in the inner city area. I guess they are hundreds of years old and have stood the test of time. They aren't particularly smooth for cars to drive on - but that's ok because they force the driver to slow down more than usual I think. On a bike they're not the best riding surface but not too bad. Definitely no good for skateboards, rollerblades or scooters. On the plus side, in the winter months, cobblestones give pedestrians some good underfoot grip when it could be slippery on normal bitumen. And cobblestones give the city some character and an element of yesteryear romance.
